The Carrickfergus Knights made a late comeback in the Championship game to tie the Belfast Trojans 7-7 before maintaining their momentum in overtime to take the trophy 13-7 in the first annual Belfast Trojans’ Charity Shield, held on the 29th of August in support of the Stroke Association of Northern Ireland.

The participants and spectators were treated to excellent weather and some fantastic football as the day progressed, with the Knights winning their first game over the Craigavon Cowboys and the Trojans coming from behind to secure a win over the league champions the Dublin Rebels. The Rebels finished in 3rd place after beating the Cowboys in the consolation match, and the championship saw the two Northern Division rivals fighting it out for the title.

It was a battle of the defenses as both teams turned the ball over numerous times, but it was the Knights who gained the momentum in the forth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Trojans had the ball first, but a stiff Knights defense held them out of the end zone; their own defense, strong throughout the day, could not keep the Knights from scoring and taking the title and the trophy.

Overall it was a great day out for all involved, and in addition to raising money for the Stroke Association of Northern Ireland, awareness was raised about this life-threatening and life-changing issue.

The Belfast Trojans have ended their season on a high note following a 15-14 defeat of the Craigavon Cowboys. After a last-second goal-line stand by the Cowboys in their last match derailed the Trojans’ playoff hopes, they were looking to return the favor. It was another hard fought game, and after an early score by the Cowboys, it was the defenses that ruled the day. This day would be different from their last match however, as it was the Trojans who marched down the field in the closing minutes of the game to take the lead and hold on for the win. With this win the Trojans close out their season with a disappointing 3-5 record, but they will look back over the games they could have won and imagine how on another day, things might have been different.

In their first meeting in the IAFL, the Belfast Trojans were narrowly defeated by the Craigavon Cowboys 24-20 in the first match of a double-header at Carrickfergus Rugby Club. With six lead changes, and 3 drives in the last five minutes of the game, the match made for excellent viewing for all those in attendance. Unfortunately for the Trojans fans, after taking the lead with 5 minutes remaining, the Cowboys were able to move the ball down the field and regain the lead. A last minute drive by the Trojans saw them to the Cowboys’ four yard line, but a tough stand by the defenders meant another loss for the Trojans and their playoff hopes dashed for another year. The last match of the season is in three weeks time, and is a chance for the Trojans to get one back on the Cowboys.
