Trojans suffer heavy defeat in season opener.
The Trojans took the long journey to Limerick, looking to avenge the defeat in this rematch of last year’s semi-final, it wasn’t to be and turned out more a ‘ De Ja Vue’ experience of what happen last season, the reigning champions starting the new campaign with a convincing win.
The Vikings took control of the game within the First Quarter with two quick touchdowns, putting the Trojans on the back foot, the Second Quarter only got worse as the constant rushing plays from the Vikings found large holes in the Trojan Defence making large gains, the result was another four touchdowns on the board and a safety against the Trojans before half time: 43-0.
If ever the saying ‘Its a game of two halves’ was appropriate, whatever Coach Barry Magee said to his team at half time, they retook the field and restored some Trojan pride.
The Defence were a shadow of the team who played the first two quarters and stopped the rampant Vikings scoring in the Third Quarter. The Trojan Offence couldn’t manage to turn this momentum into points for the visiting team, coming close, only to lose the ball through a fumble 20yards out from the Vikings end zone. All credit to the Vikings D line who worked hard for the shut out.
The Fourth Quarter saw the Vikings return to their rushing game, keeping the ball on the ground as no significant gains were being made through the air, again the Trojan Defence battled hard, but conceded again midway through the last quarter completing the 49-0 scoreline, The 365 rushing yards of the Vikings told its own story. The Trojans travelled carrying five rookies in the 23 man squad and despite the result were able to take some positives out the game. The game despite the gratifying scoreline was hard fought and both sides suffered causalities on both, the Ambulance crew being called to field on four occasions.
